Making the Most of Your Time

Learn 3 steps to getting more done everyday!
One of my goals this year was admittedly a bit lofty, but it was something I needed and wanted: keep up with the same workload, keep up with the household, cook all of our meals, but also carve out more time for myself and my family, oh and do more fun activities like putt-putt etc. Yeah that’s a tough one, don’t you think? Believe it or not, I actually made some progress with my goal…but don’t take that as me saying I’m superhuman, I’m not even close. The number one thing I found that has helped me “do it all” is to stay focused – I can be a bit scatter brained at times and I LOVE zoning out, so I worked diligently to ditch the frazzle dazzle!

One of the things that I’ve done to help me focus, is to know when to walk away and take a break – I’ll stop to do something different for a little while, listen to music, take a 20 minute cat nap (believe it or not a 20 minute cat nap is incredibly refreshing…just be sure and set an alarm) or even just do something different like a chore. Once I get a break from what I was doing, I can come back refreshed or with a fresh set of eyes so I can get things done.

Another thing I have done is I stopped switching gears too often – I have four different emails that I manage, two phones, a dog, a little boy, etc. etc. etc. I used to sit here and write a blog post and swap over to the emails when I saw a new message pop up and then swap over to another email box and before I knew it, my mind was racing and my ability to focus was gone and it would take hours to regain! Because of my “hey, there’s a squirrel” way of doing things, I would stay up later and later, wake up exhausted and very late the next morning, which meant I was behind at the start of the day! Doing things that way really made life a little unpleasant. Though, I do need to be fairly aware of emails coming in, I create stopping points for myself like: finish this paragraph, finish this one chore, complete this brainstorm session etc.

Lastly, I have been learning to better prioritize and know when enough is enough – there are things that absolutely must be completed before the day’s end, like responding to emails, preparing sponsored posts and having lunches ready for the next day. Those are three things that I know on a regular basis will need to be complete before I go to bed, if other things just need to be skipped, then I let them go, even though I really don’t want to. I love working, like realllllly love working, but that’s not what life is all about, there are people that need my love and attention, there are fun things I want to do, I want to enjoy zoning out without work hanging over my head, there are fall leaves to collect and so many more joys in life!

These three things take a LOT of discipline/work (the kind that I don’t like), but they’re necessary and they have made my life so much more fulfilling!
